In May I was contacted by 44Deep to create a night. It would be in June just after exams had finished . I helped plan , book, and also performed at a event. Which happened to be a huge success . It was the 44 Deep show at the cookie. This process began with choosing events non of which were willing to be used for free. 44 Deep which is a collective from south London , consists of Sami Ajie 8tred, Big Ben , Felix Kun and Lawrence.
Me and Kyle contacted several establishments the cookie, Basement and Bru-dog among some of the individual spaces that we decided to reach out to. The basement and cookie after some negotiations said they would host the show for free but only if we got 100 people through the door.
We decided to use the cookie as it actually had its own stage. whereas at the Basement artists would be at eye level with the crowd they would be performing too.
The planning took around 2-3 months to get everything together. Including music to be performed for the event and booking external artists from around the university.
Issues like artists turing up late to their own venue, In the first hour of the event we had acts performing but hardly any people filling out the venue. While trying to work all of this stuff out around our general schedule with all of us being students.
In the end it was a marvellous display of how community media can create an impression . Even if just for a day .
